Steenberg’s prestige cuvée, Lady R 2015, has brought home London Gold from the 2020 International Wine & Spirit Competition with an impressive score of 95/100.
Setting the international benchmark for quality, the IWSC has awarded excellence in wines and spirits for over 50 years. The judging panel comprises buyers, producers, sommeliers and wine commentators from across the globe.
This is the second international accolade for the 2015 vintage after UK wine commentator and Master of Wine, Tim Atkin, awarded the Cap Classique 93 points pronouncing it a “very smart bubbly” in his South Africa 2020 Special Report.
A consummate blend of Pinot Noir (70%) and Chardonnay (30%), Steenberg Lady R 2015 spent more than 50 months on the yeast lees before disgorgement in 2019. “The Lady R is a representation of the stunning natural acidity and ageability of the 2015 harvest season, in combination with careful time on the lees that adds texture and mouthfeel, all in beautiful harmony,” says Cellarmaster Elunda Basson.
Seriously structured, yet elegantly nuanced and vibrant, Lady R resonates the courageous life of Catharina Ras, Steenberg’s 17th century founder. Her legacy is ever present in the passion and determination of the entire Steenberg cellar team who created this statuesque Cap Classique masterpiece.
